Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Executive Director for Mental and Spiritual Health will lead and advance one of the YMCA of Coastal Carolina’s five strategic priorities: Mental Wellness, Belonging, and Spiritual Development. This executive leadership role is responsible for designing, building, and scaling a comprehensive, region-wide strategy that integrates mental wellness, spiritual care, and community belonging across all YMCA locations in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties. The role will combine vision, strategy, and execution - developing systems of care, cultivating partnerships, equipping staff and volunteers, and ensuring the YMCA’s Christian mission is expressed in ways that are both authentic and accessible to all.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in theology, counseling, psychology, social services or a related field, theological studies along with relevant work experience. Professional certifications preferred. YMCA multi-Team Leader certification preferred.
  • 10+ or more years of leadership experience in ministry, nonprofit, or related environments, including pastoral or spiritual leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and develop leaders in complex organizations.
  • Experience building partnerships and engaging diverse communities.
  • Strong communication, relational, and organizational leadership skills.
  • Experience in management and development of volunteer involvement; ability to recruit and collaborate with top community leaders.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective communication skills to present information, gather feedback, and highlight risks, opportunities, and key business points.
  • Must have strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks and balance shifting priorities while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Ability to articulate best practice in the field of Christian Emphasis and Belonging.
  • Able to inspire teamwork with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.

Essential Functions

Mental Wellness

  • Lead the development and execution of a region-wide mental wellness strategy aligned with the YMCA’s 2030 Vision. 
  • Integrate mental wellness into core YMCA programs and operations. 
  • Advance initiatives that foster belonging, connection, and community engagement. 
  • Build and manage strategic partnerships with mental health providers, schools, and community organizations, churches and other faith-based organizations. 

Spiritual Formation

  • Lead and expand a region-wide chaplaincy program to include recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation. 
  • Integrate Christian principles into YMCA culture, programs, and member experience in ways that are authentic and accessible to all, e.g., develop devotional resources for use across programs, including youth, wellness, and community initiatives. 
  • Develop tools to equip staff and volunteers in personal spiritual practices (e.g., prayer, scripture engagement, small groups). 
  • Design and lead key spiritual initiatives and events, e.g., an annual Christian Leadership Conference and community prayer gatherings. 
  • Provide pastoral care and spiritual support to staff, members, and community in times of need and celebration. 
  • Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with local churches and faith communities to expand the YMCA’s reach and mission impact.

 Coordination & Communications

  • Serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, contributing to organizational strategy and culture. 
  • In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, support donor engagement, storytelling, and fundraising efforts related to mental wellness, belonging, and spiritual development. 
  • Develop and implement internal communications strategies that reinforce the YMCA’s Christian mission and values. 
  • Lead the Christian Emphasis, Inclusion, and Belonging committee and coordinate efforts across all membership centers.
